Achilles vs Gilgamesh free essay sample

Achilles versus Gilgamesh Greg R Honors Humanities I For a large number of years, societies have recalled their saints through long, account sonnets known as sagas. The most notable Mesopotamian epic was the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Greeks were likewise notable for their composing capacity. One of the most mainstream Greek stories was the Iliad. Just as of late, thoughts started to spring up that there are explicit subjects that are utilized to associate the Akkadian sagas with the way of life of the Homeric Epics (Gresseth 2). These associations appear to incorporate how the legends were given starting with one age then onto the next, the way that passing is a focal heme in both, and how the principle character creates as the story advances. The Epic of Gilgamesh was a Sumerian epic about the ruler of Uruk. The Epic of Gilgamesh was recounted orally for a considerable length of time before it was recorded at Sumer in the late third thousand years (Fiero 19). We will compose a custom article test on Achilles versus Gilgamesh or then again any comparative subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page Much like the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Iliad was additionally discussed orally before being recorded. Both the Iliad and the Epic of Gilgamesh were presented orally and were lost likely joined by an instrument to make the retention procedure speedier and simpler. In old occasions, remembering and presenting sonnets, for example, these was viewed as diversion. For reasons unknown this custom of oral recitation ceased to exist and afterward the principal types of the legends happened. We are uncertain if the two stories were recounted orally for similar reasons, however we do realize that they give a large number of data to assist us with finding out about their societies. When taking a gander at the two legends, unmistakably demise is a focal topic all through every story. Albeit every one contains viewpoints that are comparable, the Greeks unmistakably saw passing uniquely in contrast to the way of life that created the Epic of Gilgamesh. In the epic of Gilgamesh, demise is mysteriously gone in the start of the story. Gilgamesh is clarifies how he would go from wedding to wedding laying down with the virgin ladies before the husband to be had the option to. His conduct turns out to be terrible to such an extent that the divine beings conclude that something must be finished. This is the place Enkidu comes in. The divine beings discover Enkidu, who at the time lives in the fields with all the wild monsters, and choose to tame him. They do this by luring him with a priestess from the sanctuary, or a whore (it is uncertain which one was really utilized). When this occurs, Enkidu heads out to fght Gilgamesh and execute him. They have a long epic fight that keeps going days however inevitably finishes with Gilgamesh having the advantage. After their fight they become closest companions. Enkidu is his correct hand man for everything and even goes with Gilgamesh to help him on his mission for everlasting status which was supposed to be impractical (Wolff 396). A feeling of death doesn't emerge until the divine beings conclude that either Gilgamesh or Enkidu needs beyond words. They inevitably choose to murder Enkidu by hitting him with a destructive infection. Note that Enkidu is annoyed with the way that he kicks the bucket from an infection as opposed to from fghting on the front line. This is the first run through Gilgamesh truly is made mindful to the way that demise exists. While the Sumerians obviously dreaded demise, the Greeks invited it. The Iliads principle character is a man known as Achilles. He also is semi-divine and is just worried about war. One of the primary driver for their contradicting sees on death is the definition that every one of them provides for the word interminability. The Sumerians see interminability in the strict sense: living perpetually; yet the Greeks see it from a figurative perspective: having their names live on long after they are dead and gone. Achilles is completely mindful the passing exists since as long as he can remember depends on executing aggressors and winning fights. While Gilgamesh dreaded demise, Achilles invited it. He realized that for his name to live on everlastingly, he would in the end must be murdered. He was uncertain how this would occur, however he realized that in the event that he went to Troy, he, alongside truly outstanding of the myrmidons, would be executed. His mom couldn't disclose to him which Myrmidon it was; Just that it would be truly outstanding. An intriguing point to make would be that Achilles mother is a goddess and along these lines, she can see the future and mention to Achilles what will occur. Something that make Patrocluss passing so awful is that Achilles didn't know cap he was the person who was going to bite the dust. While Achilles looks for his passing and wants it for himself, Gilgamesh gives it his best shot to maintain a strategic distance from his own demise. So albeit each culture had various perspectives on the possibility of death and whether it was something to be invited or dreaded, each culture realized that it an important thing. Up until the hour of Enkidus passing, Gilgamesh was not even mindful to the possibility of life and demise. He was just worried about being top dog and doing whatever he satisfied. After Enkidus demise, Gilgamesh is totally changed. He fears demise so uch that he embarks to discover a plant that should make whoever expends it undying. He is influenced by the passing of his companion so much that he changes his ways as a ruler. He no longer lays down with virgin ladies and even forms a divider around the city. Gilgamesh advances from being a bold, semi-divine ruler, to somebody who fears passing and attempts to stay away from it no matter what. Much like Gilgamesh, the fundamental advancement of Achilles comes after the passing of his dearest companion Patroclus. Notwithstanding, it is imperative to call attention to a couple of key things that occurred before the demise of Patroclus. Before Patrocluss demise, Achilles is completely mindful that he should pass on to have respect that was guaranteed to him from Odysseus. Nonetheless, Achilles see totally changes when Agamemnon, the Greek lord, takes his slave-lady from him. When this occurs, Achilles won't battle for the Greeks. He gets discouraged and concludes that his demise does not merit the respect that he would get. In the long run, Patroclus gets disturbed with Achilles and inquires as to whether he can go to fight without him. Achilles says yes yet asks that he just avoids the Trojans from the sea shore and that's it; for dread this would detract from his greatness. This is opposing in light of the fact that while Achilles is as yet stressed over his brilliance and allegorical interminability, he additionally accepts that after a man bites the dust, nothing remains of him. After the passing of Patroclus, Achilles concludes that life is not, at this point worth living and he wishes to pass on. He realizes that his demise will come not long after he murders Hector so this makes him need to slaughter Hector significantly more. So through the passings of their dearest companions, we can see the advancement of both Achilles and Gilgamesh. They each go from being graceless, to cultivated, and afterward back to savage and the two of them recognize that hello will in the end need to confront demise, not realizing what will happen to them after they are no more. In both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Iliad, we discover two semi-divine legends on a mission for some type of everlasting status. In spite of the fact that their perspectives vary, they are created through comparative occasions. Every start as unseemly, with no respect for other people. Both additionally have moms who are goddesses. The two of them additionally have a dear companion that implies more than any other person to them. Every one of these companions additionally kicks the bucket, which is a basic part to every story. The greatest distinction between the two eroes is that Gilgamesh is totally uninformed of death and doesn't consider it until after the passing of Enkidu.

By what means will environmental change influence the trucking business On the off chance that you go into nursing or educating, your profession presumably won’t be influenced much by changes to nature around you. All things considered, your activity is contained inside four dividers, normally in a steady, temperature-controlled condition. Wild changes in atmosphere or climate are probably not going to do a lot to your vocation in the long haul. Be that as it may, imagine a scenario in which you have a progressively outside confronting work, where natural changes can affect what you’re doing, where you do it, and how you do it. That’s one reason that environmental change can possibly have a major effect on the trucking business in the years to come. It may appear truck drivers won’t be significantly affected by natural changes-all things considered, cargo will in any case need to get from guide A toward point B, in any case. In any case, changes in atmosphere, temperature, and even the trucks themselves are for the most part p rone to influence how drivers carry out their responsibilities. Despite the fact that there is still a decent arrangement of contradiction about the reasons for environmental change and its plausible effects, let’s take a gander at certain ways environmental change might influence the trucking industry. Some kinds of trucking will turn out to be substantially more difficult. If you’ve ever observed a scene of the show Ice Road Truckers, you realize that it includes moving freight in the far north’s generally solidified, misleading regions. As indicated by Scientific American, the streets and courses utilized for this style of trucking are in genuine peril if warming patterns proceed. It will be perilous to make the streets that these truckers as of now use, restricting the spots these streets can go. Furthermore, the season for driving in these ice districts will be much shorter, influencing calendars and key courses, just as truckers’ capacity to get in an d out.Fuel costs may rise.According to AllTrucking.com, this is one of the more prompt outcomes of environmental change and warming. For certifiable instances of how this functions, perceive how fuel costs have ascended after major cataclysmic climate occasions like Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Numerous atmosphere researchers expect that serious tempests like these will keep on being increasingly normal and incessant as environmental change advances. This developing eccentrics implies that truckers and coordinations experts ought to hope to see noteworthy vacillations in fuel costs. This directly affects business for trucking organizations and drivers themselves and will probably prompt more advancements with regards to making trucks and transportation more affordable and more efficient.Trucks should turn out to be more fuel-efficient.To counter rising fuel costs and deficiencies, a significant part of the trucking industry’s ebb and flow center is around making more eco-frien dly vehicles for moving cargo. Discharges from vehicles, including trucks, are viewed as one of the main supporters of environmental change issues. So as to have trucks have less effect on the earth and guarantee that they’re utilizing less assets to take care of business, that implies refining motors, tires, and other truck segments to boost trucks’ effectiveness. What's more, it’s not simply trucks themselves-drivers may need to adjust for eco-friendliness also, modifying rate and lingering time to build efficiency and decline carbon emissions.Trucks of things to come will require practical technology.â€Å"Sustainability† is the trendy expression that applies here. Trucking is an exceptionally non-renewable energy source substantial industry, depending on gas and diesel to control the coordinations. And keeping in mind that it might appear to be senseless to think about a major apparatus driving by with sunlight based boards on top, this is an undeniab le chance later on. â€Å"Green† transportation innovation is developing progressively famous (think Tesla), and organizations are attempting to discover approaches to make existing vehicles like trucks run on half and half force sources (like gas and power) or totally on efficient power vitality sources like electric, clean local energizes, and possibly sun based force sometime in the not so distant future. The U.S. government’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is centered around creating cutting edge advances that will make the trucking business all the more sustainable.Supply chain coordinations may change. It’s likely that trucking changes will occur as a major aspect of more extensive changes in the coordinations business. Distribution centers, delivering centers, and carports may see expanded activities around reusing, ecological maintainability, crisis readiness, and different approaches that attention on lessening the carbon impress ion of the business. Furthermore, contingent upon whether a few areas become progressively inclined to outrageous climate, it could influence arranged courses and lead to various travel designs for truck drivers. Also, it’s not simply trucking-explicit concerns-disturbances in electrical force and correspondences all in all can effectsly affect the transportation business all in all. As the transportation business attempts to make up for these potential issues, the trucking business will follow suit.Emergency readiness will be much more important.Truckers should be set up for whatever occurs out and about mechanical issues, traffic issues, blocked courses, the works. When something goes wrong, it’s regularly simply the trucker and their apparatus stuck investigating until they can get securely to the following spot. Also, with a potential increment in extraordinary climate occasions, that implies having strong crisis designs set up. Trucking organizations and individua l drivers will be entrusted with guaranteeing that everybody is completely prepared on the best way to react to any occasion securely and efficiently. An case of this sort of venture up in crisis arranging is the means by which the TSA has reacted to security and dread dangers, creating complex screening and readiness designs if there should be an occurrence of crisis. Since such a large amount of trucking relies upon the climate and capacity of the drivers to get from Point A to Point B, we could see the business create comparative enormous scope intends to make up for climate disasters.Truckers may require more and distinctive training. In request to turn into a truck driver, you as of now need a fundamental Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). What's more, drivers have the choice to get â€Å"endorsements,† or extra affirmations for various types of driving. At this moment, these supports incorporate things like twofold trailers, traveler vehicles, tank vehicles, and da ngerous materials. A few specialists accept that later on, with expanded guideline and a worldwide spotlight on ecological manageability, there might be environmental change-propelled supports identified with natural principles and possibility arranging. Since each state has its own CDL program, they can tailor these norms to the ecological issues well on the way to affect their state. For instance, warming in Alaska would prompt unexpected ecological worries in comparison to, state, expanded storms in Florida or along the Gulf Coast, so any adjustments in state-explicit CDL affirmations would be associated with geology and likely possibilities.U.S. street foundation will change.Extreme climate like significant tempests and flooding can make significant harm the framework streets and roadways that truckers depend on to keep cargo moving around the nation. Crumbling streets can build traffic, which means expanding fuel use and carbon emanations, also losing planned and coordinations. One of the more charming alternatives for battling this foundation disintegration is self-fixing streets. It sounds super-modern, doesn’t it? In any case, a few materials researchers are now inquiring about ways that basic materials like steel fleece can help streets â€Å"heal† themselves when they experience the ill effects of flooding or general crumbling. Better streets mean better everyday outcomes for truck drivers, making it simpler to ship load and diminish mileage on the trucks themselves. Enhancements to foundation that make up for future harm will help the trucking business look after productivity (or even enhance flow levels of efficiency).Truckers will become information analysts.Truck driving will at present never be that 9-to-5 occupation in a work area, however drivers may end up getting better familiar with natural information like discharges insights and the effect of their truck and courses on the quick condition so as to ensure they’re fulfi lling set ecological guidelines while conveying their cargo in the most expense and time-viable ways.Innovation and adaptability will be key.The capacity to adjust and change regardless of what the earth tosses at us will be vital in each industry pushing ahead, yet much more so in ventures where the components outside directly affect the primary concern. Trucking is an industry that can possibly adjust its ecological worries to its business concerns and plan for a dubious natural future. Regardless of whether a portion of the more critical environmental change expectations never happen, this move toward ecological obligation and versatility are still liable to influence the trucking business in the years and decades to come.

Violence in Modern Video Games - Free Essay Example

Video Games  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Gaming proves to be a large preference of entertainment sought after by teenagers around the world. With the increase in technology, there proves to be an increase in the amount of adolescents participating in video games as a source of entertainment, particularly violent games. Although there prove to be few benefits in playing video games, studies show that engaging in violent game play results in a growing amount of aggression among adolescents in forms of behaviors, thoughts, and desensitization. Although violence is not new to the world, the access that the younger generation proves able to engage in proves to have increased as technology increases. The research being conducted on the effects of video games proves to be a newer study that has onset itself with the growing number of crimes being committed by teenagers. First, a study proves to deem violent video games a risk factor in terms of promoting aggressive behavior (Kimmig). Although these studies prove to be controversial, the information should not be taken lightly. However, one must note that aggressive behavior does not solely rely on the exposure to games, but their influence should not be ignored. Alongside this, these games are shown to promote violent behavior due to the ability to actively engage and identify with the acts committed by the onscreen character. For example, a first person shooter game is being actively commanded by the player, therefore allowing for a more intimate version of the game (Bushman). These studies show that although violent behavior does not solely base itself on violent games, there influence on ones behavior should not be eliminated. Alongside the ability for violent video games ability to promote aggressive behavior, proves to be the thoughts that accompany them. Although many teenagers engage in thoughts that are deemed violent, many do not act on this rage. However, accompanying violent video games into this mix p roves to be an issue. For example, the average time a young adult spends playing video games weekly stands at approximately 15 hours a week (Kimmig). With this much screen time focused on things such as murder, the thoughts that accompany this prove to be outstanding. Next, studies are also deeming video games to possess the addictive qualities that lead many to commit violent crimes. For example, 0.5 percent of all gamers and 1.7 percent of ninth graders experience symptoms associated with excessive video game use (Vitelli). When something becomes addictive, the thoughts oftentimes consume the person on a large scale. Therefore, while video games in themselves are not deemed addictive on the same scale as drugs or alcohol, the addictive qualities are presenting themselves in young adults, leading to the increasing thoughts of violence. Finally, alongside the aggressive thoughts and behaviors, the exposure to a multitude of violent acts on a large scale leads to the desensitization among many adolescents. Although many link violent games to aggressive behavior, there are studies to show that it also links itself to the desentization to real life violence. This proves to be a large scale issue to the inability for students to react appropriately in situations that deem themselves as violent or aggressive. Instead of appropriate reactions, those who engage in long hours of violent game play may either be nonreactive or react positively where the situation deems the opposite. The correlation between video games and their link to violent behavior may link strongly to ones large amounts of play causing them to no longer react grotesquely to sights involving blood and gore (Bushman). These changes are shown to be chronic changes in the brainwaves that may have long term effects if not caught soon enough. Therefore, desensitization proves to be a dramatic effect that leads to a snowball effect in violence among young adults. In conclusion, although violent video games are not the only component in deciding a violent young adult, the effects of game play should not be ruled out. The accompanying thoughts and behaviors that may arise with long hours of gameplay associated with mental health issues prove to be a dangerous combination that should be addressed with caution. Therefore, limiting violent video games proves to be a necessary action to preserve the minds of the future generations. Works Cited Are Video Games Addictive? Freelance Writing Jobs Fiverr Review

Fiverr Review Fiverr is just one of the many freelance websites that have become popular in recent years. It’s a relatively new site among freelance portals, as it was launched in 2010. If you are looking to find new clients to increase your current freelance income or just to supplement your 9 to 5 job, Fiverr could be just what you need. One of the challenges for those of us who freelance is finding and retaining quality clients. If you’re like most freelancers, you have profiles on multiple sites, but rely on one or two sites for most of your work. Part of this is because of the time it takes to keep active profiles and browse job postings on more than just a couple sites. This is where I think Fiverr really caters to freelancers. Once you create your account and finalize your â€Å"Gig† page, clients can easily find and hire you and Fiverr will then send you a notification. Yep, it’s that easy. Fiverr Review: How Works With Fiverr, freelancers create essentially ads that indicate the service they are willing to offer along with details that aim persuade the employer to hire them. There is even an option to do a video listing for your services. Employers or clients can then browse offerings and hire freelancers to complete work, ranging from simple writing jobs to editing, as well as jobs in countless other industries. The user interface is easy to use for both freelancers and clients. Fiverr includes a mobile version as well as an app for Android or iOS users. Most other freelance sites are set up so that employers post a description of a job and freelancers then spend hours browsing job postings, before sending a proposal or a bid for jobs that fit their skills. Employers can set a budget amount for their project, but many times these amounts are merely placeholders because an employer may not know the going rate for the type of work they need. This means that employers often get into the habit of looking for the least expensive bid and quality freelancers have to lower their rates in order to compete with other freelancers. Freelance sites include people from all over the world, and workers in third-world countries can easily outbid those here in the UK or in the US. The result is that some freelancers bid at levels way lower than what the work is worth. On Fiverr, the minimum price is as its name suggests: five dollars. This means that the price is low to begin with, but it is not as bad as it sounds. Get Your Feet Wet As with most other freelance websites, in Fiverr, you first need to setup your user profile. This includes your basic information as well as specific skills that you specialize in. For each skill, you can indicate whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or expert user. I found it to be a pretty straightforward process and very similar to setting up a profile on other sites. It was definitely much faster than creating my profile on Upwork or LinkedIn, but the process is similar. Once you’ve created your profile, go ahead and browse the Fiverr categories. Take some time to review profiles of other freelancers in your area of expertise and look at their skills to get a feel for where your services will fit in and what rates you should charge for the work you’re going to do. No matter what your specialty is, Fiverr has a place for you. Broad categories include the following services: Graphics Design Digital Marketing Writing Translation Video Animation Music Audio Programming Tech Advertising Business Lifestyle Gifts Fun Bizarre Misc Each broad category also has anywhere from nine to eighteen subcategories of services listed underneath it. This makes it really easy for you to properly categorize your services and as an added bonus, it makes it quick and easy for clients to find the freelancers who specialize in the type of work needed. It’s a win-win for both sides. The Great and Powerful â€Å"Gig† Page Once you’ve completed your profile and taken some time to check out your competition, it’s time to create your â€Å"Gig Page† and get your services out there so clients can find you. I feel this is an area where Fiverr is really unique. Instead of browsing hundreds of job postings daily for the five that suit your skills and then writing yet another bid proposal and waiting for clients to respond, Fiverr actually lets you set up your service packages so the clients can come to you! This is a real time saver I think for freelancers and probably for clients too. On your Gig page, you need to outline your service packages with a clear description of what’s included in the price of each package. I found this to be a great feature, much better than constantly rewriting bid proposals every time a client posts a new job. Going through the process of creating your Gig page will also help new freelancers to really think through their service offerings and rates. You can create just one service package or a trio of packages (i.e. basic, value, and plus). You can determine the names for each package and customize all the details. For the writing/editing categories, there is even a calculator so that clients can input the number of words they need and quickly see what your price would be. The last thing you do is to create a set of detailed instructions for your potential client so they know exactly what you will need them to provide so that you can get started on their project. This feature really reduces the back and forth negotiation and emails that can often accompany getting started with a new client on other freelance sites. Connect to the World As part of your profile settings, Fiverr gives you the option to connect your Fiverr account to your other social media accounts. This is a great way for you to not only share your professional image with clients, but also to let them see a little bit of your personality (assuming you want to let them see that side of you) If you are just starting out in the freelance world, I would recommend connecting to LinkedIn and perhaps Google, because users tend to be more business oriented and professional. Before linking your Facebook account to Fiverr, I suggest you carefully review your page, your past posts, and your photos. Once you link, clients will have access to your personal posts and you want to maintain your professional image in most cases. Social media accounts that you can link to Fiverr include: Facebook Google Dribbble Stack Overflow LinkedIn Cost and Fees There is absolutely no up-front cost to using Fiverr, which means it’s a great place to test the water if you are new to freelancing. You can even upgrade your membership at no charge to you. Once you find a client who will hire you, Fiverr does hit pretty hard with a 20% fee for each project. This means if you make $10, Fiverr will take $2 right off the top. Fiverr does have something unique for its membership upgrade that is worth mentioning. Freelancers can upgrade their membership to gain more features, and there is no monthly membership fee like you will find on most sites. This system is actually a way to reward higher level members who have done quality work. Complete orders successfully and maintain at least a 4-star rating for the required time period and your membership is upgraded to the next level. Simple as that. One thing I didn’t like about Fiverr is that a client can simply â€Å"hire† you and send you a notification to accept even if you have never bid on their job. Be very careful and diligent before you â€Å"accept† a job from a client because once you do accept, you will be automatically charged the commission fee for that job. I had to contact customer service to have it reversed. Commission fees are also typically Non-refundable, which means if you are charged a commission fee and then do not get paid by the client, you will lost that money. There have also been reports of users having their accounts frozen and their funds locked. These issues, for me, were a deal-breaker, as it opens you up to financial liability if clients don’t pay you. This is why my time on Fiverr was very short-lived and why I no longer use this portal. Cons Unfortunately, the customer service for Fiverr falls doesn’t seem to differ much from other freelance sites. The first level customer service can be slow to respond and when they do finally respond, they will simply copy and paste answers from their manual. In many cases, the answers they provide are not at all customized to your specific problem and don’t always make sense. Fiverr ratings are also inaccurate. Part of this is due to the fact that when clients cancel a job, you cannot leave a negative review. Also, it seems a job can be canceled at any point and the money refunded to the client. My suggestion is that you choose your clients carefully and communicate clearly so that you can avoid the scammers. The scammers are out there just like on any website. It’s a bummer, but not a deal breaker. I was very impressed with Fiverr to begin with, it offers a unique twist to freelance sites and I feel they cater to the freelancer whereas other freelance sites seem to cater to the clients. Federal Elementary And Secondary Education Act Essay

The last century in American history has yielded educational reforms, federal legislations, school improvement plans and interventions, which consistently influence best practices in school systems. After the report, A Nation at Risk (1983), the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 was reauthorized in 2001 as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act (U.S. Department of Education, 2001). This reauthorization was a call to attain educational equality for all American students and to lessen the achievement gaps between and among ethnicity groups, children of poverty, and disabled populations (U.S. Department of Education, 2001). Additionally, because of this increased scrutiny of student performance, other classification categories emerged such as gender. Investigating college-readiness by looking at the data for particular groups pinpoints definite achievement gaps. The profile of a college student in the United States reveals that about 60% of recent graduate are â€Å"not college-ready† (Kirst, 2007). High school graduation data broken down by ethnicity indicates that 97% of African Americans and 90% of Hispanics are not college-ready upon high school completion (Collins, 2009). This percentage compares to 33% of Caucasian and 25% of Asian students being college-ready at high school completion (Bettinger Long, 2007). Further, an investigation of gender disparities reveal that males and females tend to perform similarly on college readinessShow MoreRelatedThe Importance Of Indiana Content Standard For District Level Educators810 Words   |  4 Pageschild find process. Parental Responsibility Laws A Burden On Society

Parental Responsibility Laws: A Burden on Society When a person enters the world of parenthood some real responsibilities are to be expected. A parent is responsible for their children’s life and wellbeing, as well as their own. Eventually there comes a time in every parent’s life when their little baby is no longer little, or a baby for that matter. That child will grow, learn, influence, and be influenced by many people on their journey from child to adult. Some of the decisions they make may actually break local, state, or in serious cases federal law. Since the 1800’s there has been a push to establish Parent Responsibility laws, which hold bad parents accountable for the criminal actions for their child. These laws punish parents†¦show more content†¦Many parents realize the struggle of how impossible it is to know the exact location or activity of their children as they get older and require space and privacy to develop their sense of self. These laws don’t take into consideration that chi ldren need to explore and discover their own path in life, requiring time away from parents. So why are parents being punished for the decisions their child made, if nature is just taking its course? Le Sage continues to argue that, â€Å"It should be determined that the moral development of the youngster is deficient or stagnated. After all, if there is no reason to think that there is any developmental delay or shortcoming, then there is no reason to believe that this youngster lacked moral education.† (Le Sage) If a child does not lack moral education how can we possibly pass the blame onto someone else; and if a child does not have a mental deficiency, then shouldn’t they be held accountable for their own actions. These are important factors to consider before placing the blame of a juveniles own actions on their parents. If a child has no impairments or ailments proper education would go further in teaching these kids a lesson than fining or jailing the parents because, they actually have an opportunity to see the mistakes they made and allow them to correct the negative behavior by offering support Many of these parentShow MoreRelatedEssay on Working Women, the Government, and Politics1613 Words   |  7 Pagessecond shift. Newton The Injustice Of Affirmative Action Essay Example For Students

Newton The Injustice Of Affirmative Action Essay Affirmative ActionAffirmative action was orginally designed to help minorities, but women-especially whitewomen-have made the greatest gains as a result of these programs(Gross, 1996). Affirmative action is agrowing argument among our society. It is multifaceted and very often defined vaguely. Many peopledefine affirmative action as the ability to strive for equality and inclusiveness. Others might see itas a quote-based system for different minority groups. I agree and support affirmative actions in thatindividuals should be treated equally. I feel affirmative action as an assurance that the bestqualified person will receive the job. Is affirmative action fair? In 1974, a woman named Rose was truned down for a supervisory job infavor of a male. She was told that she was the most qualified person, but the position was going to befilled by a man, because he had a family to support. Five years before that, when Rose was about to fillan entry-level position in banking, a personnel officer outlined the womans pay scale, which was $25 to$50 month less than what men were being payed for the same position. Rose was furious because she feltthis was descriminating to her. She confronted the personnel officer and he saw nothing wrong with it. Thanks to affirmative action today things like these situations are becoming more rare and/or correctedmore quickly. Affirmative action has definately helped women and minorities in their careers, but it hasyet to succed in the goal of equality to the fullest for the business world to woment and minorities. Some observers argue that women have made huge strides!with the help of affirmative action. They now hold 40 percent of all corporate middle-management jobs, and the number of women-owned businesses has grown by 57 percent since 1982(Blackwood, 1995). Affirmative action was desinged to give qualified minorities a chance to compete on equalfooting with Whites (Chappell, 1995). Equal opportunities for the blacks, for the most part, hasremained more wishful-thinking than fact. Black students are continuing to struggle to seek aneducation, black business owners are still competing against their White counterparts, and black workersare experienceing an unemployment rate twice that of Whites and hold dead-end, labor-intensive,low-paying jobs. Few can argue that racism is still rampant in awarding craontcts, jobs, andeducational opportunities, eventhough its been proven benefical to have people of different races withdifferent ideas and different experiences working toward the same goal (Chappell, 1995). The employment outlook for minorities is grim, but not hopeless. We definaltely need affirmativeaction to overcome the disparities of employment that exist int his country. A recent Urban Benchmarksstudy found that of 71 metro areas surveyed nationwide, Pittsburgh had the highest rate ofemployment-related problems among non-Hispanic whites between the ages of 25 and 54 and the sixth highestrate among African Americans in the same age group. We have a lot of problems with basic education hereand if you dont have basic education, you have no chance of getting a good job because competition isincreasing for everyone. We must make sure that we educate our potential work force, includingminorities, or our competitive edge, if we have one, will continue to decline in golbal markets. Manyjobs today are in the technician and technologist area. Jobs require more than a high-schooldiploma,but less than a four-year degreesuch as an associate degree or certificate fro!m a vocational or trade sch ool (Kovatch, 1996). As more and more women faced discrimination in largefirms, more decided to strike out on their own. In conclusion, most Americans know that the deck is stacked against poor kids. They also realizethat, because of past discrimination, an extraordinary number of those facing unequal opportunities areblack. So, while 75 percent of Americans oppose racial preferences, according to a 1995 WashingtonPost/ABC poll, two-thirds with to change affirmative actionprograms rather than do away with thementirely. But the public also realized that, in real life, the legacy of discrimination is not alwaysso neat. It is diffuse, and it requires a broader remedy.

Martin Luther King Jr ] Essay Example For Students

Martin Luther King Jr ] Essay 9 A Discussion and Analysis Of some of his Contributions As Well as their Social, Political and Economic Impacts Since the Thirteen Colonies first united, the United States has had one of the strongest economies in the world. Over the years, many theorists have had varying opinions concerning the reason for this nations strong economic standing. One reason that has often been overlooked is that a great many of this nations workers have been influenced by the Protestant work ethic. The philosophy behind this work ethic has driven many workers to attain as much as possible at their jobs during their lifetimes. If one man were to be given credit for the development of the Protestant work ethic it would have to be Martin Luther. In the course of the next several pages this researcher will examine the ethic that has had such a great impact on the United States economy and on the economies of other nations. It has been suggested by such writers as Weber and Smith that the Protestant work ethic first developed around the word calling. Basically, this term has a religious connotation which is a task set by God. However, gradually this term was expanded to the point where it covered many of mans activities. During the Protestant Reformation, the term calling started to take on a new meaning. Fulfilling ones duty in worldly affairs became a task of extreme importance. gradually, fulfilling ones duty was not only important but it became the moral obligation of every individual (the highest form of moral activity). Before the Reformation, the Catholic Church did not believe that everyday world activities had a religious significance. As a result of Luther these world activities were quite important in adhering to Gods wishes. Rather than devote ones life to worshipping God through prayer, and instead of sacrificing all worldly goods to follow Christ, the Protestants believed that the task of every person is to fulfill (to the best of his/her ability) their tasks on earth. This unique conception of the word calling was developed by Luther during his first active decade as a reformer. At first he believed, like many other theologians, that everyday world activities were activities of the flesh. Although these activities were willed by God, they were nonetheless morally neutral. However, gradually Luther began to protest against the life of the monks. He criticized them as leading a life devoid of value as a means of justification before God, but he also looks upon its renunciation of the duties of this world as a product of selfishness, withdrawing from temporal obligations. This was in direct contrast to the everyday labors of man. These worldly activities were outward expressions of mans love for others and for God. Thus, according to Luther, the only way to live up to the expectations God has for us is to fulfill our worldly duties. A very important point that Luther makes in reference to callings is that each calling has the same worth in the eyes of God. The effect of the Reformation that was initiated by Luther was that worldly labor was given religious sanction. This stands opposed to the Catholic tradition which did not give such worldly matters any moral emphasis. Luther stated that people may attain salvation in any walk of life. it did not matter what a person did during their lifetime as long as they worked as hard as possible. In hard work and dedication to ones calling, salvation could be achieved. Before Luther professed these beliefs, people placed little emphasis on the daily tasks they had to complete. Jobs had little meaning except that they placed bread on the table to eat. However, with Luthers concept of the calling people now had a moral reasons to work as hard as they could. The jobs of people were given religious sanction and this lead to workers striving to attain more in their jobs. Thus, there can be no doubt that Luther changed the attitudes of people toward their roles in society. People placed a new emphasis on their work roles. .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .postImageUrl , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:hover , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:visited , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:active { border:0!important; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:active , .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917 .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uec040bcdcd4cf8a73f1cc7bec1629917:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hamlet10 Essay In the following pages the effect that this had on the economy will be examined. .

My Neighbors Essays - Frankie Laine Discography, Szd Speech

My Neighbors I'm sure going to miss their great friendliness and hospitality. They were always so nice to me, and my mom and dad. They were probably the best neighbors we have ever had. I think Judy was the first friend I met when I moved here from Wisconsin. We were both so young, it's bad of me not going to the funeral. I'll probably regret that I didn't go later on but, I just couldn't handle it right now. Brandon we' re home. Yea Mom I'm upstairs, do you think that anyone has moved into the Smites house yet? No I don't think so, why? Because all the lights are on. Also there is a car that looks like the Smites in the driveway. You know that is impossible their car was totaled in the accident. The police had to cut the car in half to get the three bodies out. Well don't worry about it. You know we just came from their funeral it must be someone from the real estate company who has a car like John and Beth had. Why don't you come down and eat. We stopped and got pizza. Sounds great I'll be down in a minute. Gosh mom why did you get all this pizza? Are you expecting company? No Brandon, if we don't finish it tonight, I'll put the left over pizza in the refrigerator. Sure mom, like we're going to finish it all tonight. I wouldn't be so sure, I think you are in for a surprise tonight. Hey.. uh mom what's that old grungy book doing on the table? Its an old book that's been passed down through several generations of my family. I thought that you would like to look at it with me and your father. As I took a glance at this queer looking book I noticed the peculiar title that read MAGICO NEGRO. I figured it was spanish but had no idea what it meant. I ignored it and as I was hungry, and sat down for dinner. When I was getting ready to chow down, my mother said Why don't we pray? This had me stupefied because we usually only pray when it's a special dinner or holiday But when mom picked up the freaky book I was alarmed and fearful of what she planned on doing! I saw that she had opened it to the Vs and was looking at the word vecino in capital letters. Mom was acting very strange. She told my father and I to hold hands with her in a circle around the table. She then continued, telling us to repeat after her. Her words were not familiar to me as she said sim sim sala beem. We all repeated, again sim sim sala beem. After what seemed like twenty minutes of repeating these odd words and phrases mom stopped. I felt a cold gust of winter air blow down my spine. I found this unbelievable as it was a hot August evening. I was really ready for the pizza, as it was getting cold, especially with the cold blast of arctic air blowing through the house. Just as I was about to dig in, mom said wait for the guests. What guests, I didn't know any one was coming over! Who could it be, mom and dad's best friends were dead!! DING DONG the doorbell rang, I don't think I'll ever get to eat. I hate pizza warmed in the microwave. Mom said Brandon why don't you get the door I reluctantly agreed. As I approached the door I could see the outline of three people. One looked to be about my age with long hair. As I opened the door to see who was keeping me from my dinner, I almost fell over. In fact I guess I did fall over. The next thing I knew I was on the floor and Mr. Smite was trying to revive me, and Judy was holding my hand. I can't tell you the thoughts that were going on in my head. Mass confusion, total disbelief, how could this be happening, they're DEAD! Mom came running in to the foyer to see what the commotion was all about. Hi Beth, Hi John, Hi

A Stranger Looking in my House Would Probably Think...

A stranger looking in my house would probably think my life is society’s definition of normalcy: a father, a mother, a daughter, and a son, all living in one house. We eat from the same refrigerator, use the same den to watch television, and swim in the same pool. One big happy family, right? Wrong! Behind closed doors, chaos emerges. Unless you were my friend, or a resident of my town, you probably wouldn’t realize that my parents are in the midst of a hectic and painful process: signing divorce papers. My father resides in a guest room downstairs. My parents take turns with days they choose to look after my brother and me. After all, being in the same room together is not always the most pleasant experience. One could even say that what split my parents apart is the fact that they are complete opposites. Although 50% of marriages end in divorce, in my small town, divorce isn’t that common an occurrence. My mom, being the social butterfly that she is, has made it known, publicly, that she and my father have become separated. One might assume that I might be bothered by this part of my life being out in the open; surprisingly, I’m really not. The truth is, I was never â€Å"Daddy’s Little Girl,† making divorce a not-so-hard pill to swallow. Having been brought up in Russia, my father has a completely different mindset from my mom, as well as me. He is shy, stubborn, and maintains completely opposing political views. These days, my dad and I could go on for hours arguing about President Bush’s actions, and it would be considered normal. If you went back a year or two, the situation with my father would be extremely different. I was always somewhat fearful of him; I would never challenge his opinions, and if he and my mom fought, I would sit in silence. The man who was supposed to be the most positive influence on my life made me think that men were pigs, a nd were allowed to treat women like dirt. Ever since my parents began their split, almost a year ago, I have continued to learn that women should not only be treated with respect, but should demand respect as well as demand to have their own opinions heard. My father’s opinion is not the only one which matters in the divorce court, and he has no right to expect more respect than my mom. Yes, I sound harsh, but I, like my mother, deserve and demand respect. Today, when in a situation with my father, I am able to voice my opinion, because it matters. Sometimes, I actually want to thank him thank him for making me a wiser person, and for making me appreciate my own opinion.

Essay --

â€Å"In July 1945, the first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico and the next month the second and third weapons off the production line were dropped on Japan. Since then no nuclear weapons have been used in anger, although tens of thousands have been accumulated by the major powers and their destructiveness and sophistication increased immensely.† The nature of warfare is constant and evolved from multiple factors and military revolutions over time. The purpose of this paper is to identify the most important military revolution in history and highlight its effects that permeate modern day society. The proliferation of nuclear weapons is the most significant military revolution that led to the greatest changes in warfare, which include the immergence of new threats such as non-state actors, the shift from total war to low intensity conflict, and the importance of technology and innovation. This military revolution completely shattered existing paradigms of warfare due to th e real threat of nuclear weapons’ total destruction of humanity. The arrival of nuclear weapons transformed the international playing field permanently and new threats such as non-state actors have immerged as a result. Initially, only superpowers with nuclear arsenals had a global role as was evident during the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union, but nuclear proliferation triggered a race to possess this power in the last 60 years. The possible employment of nuclear weapons between the two superpowers during the Cold War was unprecedented. The power of this stalemate shattered the paradigm of warfare and demonstrated how significant this military revolution’s effects were even at the mere threat of nuclear weapons use. Regarding this standoff between t... ... examined the importance of the nuclear weapons military revolution and its lasting impacts on modern day society. Evidence presented supports why this military revolution had the most impact of all on warfare and was carefully illustrated through the immergence of new threats, the shift from total war and high intensity conflict to low intensity conflict and finally, the critical role that technology and innovation has played since the advent of nuclear weapons. This is important in today’s operational and strategic environment due to the fact that American military and political leadership will continue to have taken in account the use of nuclear weapons on the battlefield. As globalization continues to set the conditions for nuclear weapons proliferation worldwide, the restraints and operational risks will dramatically increase and affect all strategic planning.

Marriage & Family

A sexual script consists of expectations of how to behave sexually as a female or male and as a heterosexual, lesbian, or gay male. (Cohen, DeVault, & Strong 2008 p. 191) We use sexual scripts to direct us on how to organize, interpret and react to different sexual situations and emotions significantly. Our original sexual scripts starts as traditional, they are formed by what we learn from our parents, other adolescents or through watching television. Our sexual identities form while learning to be sexual and this begins in our adolescence, progressively we will change our scripts as we continue to experience new situations. Depending on what we gained knowledge of and included into our sexual scripts our emotions will play through our learned interactions. Sexual behavior, what we consider as sexually normal, our social lives and gender roles all play a part in what makes our sexual scripts differ between males and females. The traditional sexual script identifies the male as sexuall y aggressive and views sex as more of a recreational pastime, where they are focused more on pleasuring themselves. Cohen, DeVault and Strong 2008 p. 191 describes a few assumptions regarding the male script by Therapist Bernie Zilbergeld; men should not have certain feelings, a man always want sex and is always ready for it, performance is what counts, and a man is in charge, all physical contact leads to sex, sex equals intercourse, sex always leads to orgasm. The traditional female scripts suggest that women focus on emotions more that sex. Assumptions were also made for women; sex is both good and bad, girls don’t want to know about their genitalia, sex is for men, men should know what women want, women should not talk about sex, women should look like beautiful models, women are nurturers, and there is only one right way to experience orgasm. In the society today sexual scripts are slightly altered because gender roles are slightly altered.Traditional sexual scripts are n ow being replaced with contemporary sexual scripts, some of the assumptions that are made regarding both sexes are sexual expression is good, sexual activities may be initial by either partner, both parents have a right to experience orgasm, non marital sex is acceptable within a relationship context. Our sexual scripts are called into play when dealing with sexual activity and other social interactions. These scripts are used when viewing ourselves or others. I believe sexual scripts are used in everyday situations, in how we speak to one another or allow other to speak to us.Sexual scripts can determine who we date or marry and how we interact with our significant others. I believe that an individual assume that everyone shares the same sexual script as themselves and in times we are shocked when we learn otherwise. We believe that we have the same beliefs and view the world through the same glasses. People assume that sexual scripts are simple such as boy like girl, girl likes bo y, boy works, girls cleans, boy wants sex girl gives sex, while in the new generation most are following a modern style of living with a contemporary style of sexual scripts.

The Battle Of The Civil War - 1736 Words

Abstract: As the first major battle of the Civil War the First Battle of Bull Run was an end to the illusions of a quick war and instead offered a first glimpse into the long and bloody four-year struggle the Civil War would become. In this paper the battle and its many repercussions across the political, social and military spectrum of the Union and Confederacy will be explored. Background: With the formation of the Confederate States and the outbreak of hostilities at Ft. Sumter only a few months earlier there was both political and popular pressure on both sides to commence hostilities and bring the war to a quick conclusion. Both sides believed that a few decisive battles would settle the matter and in the southern opinion would†¦show more content†¦Sumter. In response to these factors President Lincoln directed General McDowell to devise a plan to attack the Confederates. In response the General drew up a plan to engage the rebels at Manassas Junction, Va. While McDowell had confidence in his plan he wasn’t as confident in his men who at the time were green and untested by battle. McDowell asked for more time to train his troops but the political pressure and popular opinion prevented any delays. This sentiment is evident in the words of Union Quartermaster-General Meigs who stated, â€Å"it’s better to whip them here†¦to make fight in Virginia was cheaper and the better case† (McPherson pg336). In this assessment Lincoln agreed and directed McDowell to commence his offensive as planned stating, â€Å"You are green it is true†¦but they are green also, you are all green alike†. (McPherson pg. 336) Prelude to Battle: In June of 1861 McDowell presented his plan to Lincoln and the Cabinet to engage the flank of the 24,000 Confederates forces stationed at Bull Run Creek about 25 miles South West of Washington, DC. This Confederate force was commanded by General Beauregard, the hero of Ft Sumter which gave the plan an added benefit of a bit revenge. McDowell’s plan of attack was to use 35,000 Union Troops advancing in three separate columns with 10,000 troops held in reserve to engage a combined Confederate Army stationed
